IP Reputation

IP reputation measures the trustworthiness or credibility of an IP address based on its historical behavior and activities. In the context of email security, IP reputation helps identify malicious senders, route suspicious emails to spam folders, or block them entirely. If an IP address consistently sends authentic, spam-free emails, it maintains a positive IP reputation score; IP addresses associated with spam, malware, or abusive behavior receive negative scores.

IP reputation is quantified as an IP score, with higher scores indicating a positive reputation and lower scores signaling potential risk. Security systems, email providers, and internet service providers maintain reputation databases that track the historical behavior of IP addresses.

Factors that affect IP reputation include

Volume and Frequency: Sending unusually high volumes of email in short periods is a common indicator of spam campaigns or compromised systems acting as spam relays.

Spam Complaints: High rates of spam complaints from recipients who mark messages as unwanted directly impact IP reputation scores.

Blacklist Inclusion: Appearing on email blacklists (RBLs or DNSBLs) significantly damages IP reputation and can cause email delivery failures.

Bounce Rates: High rates of undeliverable messages suggest poor list hygiene and spamming behavior.

Engagement Rates: Low open rates and high delete-without-read rates signal that recipients do not want the messages being sent.

Authentication Failures: Frequently failing SPF, DKIM, or DMARC checks negatively impacts sender reputation.

Organizations with poor IP reputation may find their legitimate emails blocked or filtered to spam folders, impacting business communications. Maintaining good IP reputation requires sending permission-based email, maintaining clean recipient lists, authenticating email properly, and promptly addressing abuse reports. Pangratis analyzes IP reputation as one of many signals in detecting and blocking malicious email.
